5 traits of a good hair stylist

Whilst you never really know until you go, here’s some advice from the boss herself, Maria, for when you’re searching for a new hair stylist to point you in the right direction.

We’ve all been there. Found a hairdresser we love, who completely ‘gets’ your hair (and your style) and then they move salons to the other side of the city (or the world) and it’s no longer convenient for you to visit them…

Or you’ve moved to a new city with 20,000 salons but you really have no idea where to start when making an appointment? Will they understand your style? Will they really listen to what you want? Not forgetting make you feel comfortable and gives you enough confidence that you can actually enjoy the experience and not be sat on the edge of your seat wondering “is this going to be one of  those situs where I grin and bear it then cry the minute I leave the salon?”

Whilst you never really know until you go, here’s some advice from the boss herself, Maria, for when you’re searching for a new hair stylist to point you in the right direction.

They listen

“A good hairdresser will always make you feel like you are listened to. If you’re wanting a very niche colour, a shaved head or just a trim - a hairdresser should be good at listening to exactly what it is that you want.

Don’t know what you want? Well, they should be able to advise you based on your skin tone, eye colour and general style. Hair is more than just hair, it’s a part of your ‘look’ and an extension of your personal style. A good hairdresser should understand this and be able to make recommendations based all of the above.

Look out for those offering free consultations before setting foot near your hair - and take them up on it.

They might say no

“Whilst a good stylist will always listen, this may also mean that they may say no from time to time. Want to go blonde in 4 hours when you have jet black hair? Or desperate for a fringe but your hair is prone to bounce and frizz?

It might be what you want at the time, but you’ll be thanking us later when you’re wishing for that fringe to grow out because you can’t bear to style it every day or your hair is breaking at the ends because it couldn’t handle the peroxide.

Don’t take it the wrong way if your hairdresser says no or advises against something you’re asking for. At the end of the day, they could be taking your money to do something to your hair which you’ll hate - so what does that really say about them?

A good hairstylist will always have your hair health as their first priority, so if they say no - take it as a good sign.”

Pick a stylist who is right for your hair colour & type

“Every salon is different, some may be better at wild colours whilst others may be expert at more natural tones such as blondes and balayage. Whether it’s a cut or a colour transformation you’re after, make sure you pick a salon that specialises in what you’re looking for.

Before picking your one, do your research. This means not just checking the website but checking google for reviews, instagram and facebook pages - oh and remember to check the tagged photos not just the ones on the feed!”

Years aren’t everything

“Yes, of course experience matters. But years of styling experience don’t necessarily add up to being the best stylist.

Years behind the chair don’t add up a PHD in haircoloring, cutting, styling or weaving. While experience aids in wisdom and knowledge, a good stylist should be continuing their education on new technologies and techniques to keep up on the ever-changing trends of hairstyling.

A true stylist needs to continue their education in order to provide their clients with the latest trends in hair. Ask about the stylist’s educational background, how often the stylist enrolls in educational experiences, courses or events. My rule of thumb is the more the better. If the stylist you’re visiting cares about you as their client, their career, and their industry, it is in their own best interest to be “in the know” of all new innovative trends and technology…..you want dream hair …not dated hair!”

They’re open to critique

“Feedback is everything. The most important quality a great stylist should have is the ability to accept criticism. Every good relationship needs trust and your clients should be able to come to you with everything.

During my consultations when I was behind the chair, this was my dialogue to every new guest,” shares Gina. “‘Sally, I know we just met, but I want you to know my priority is that you are 100% happy. I take nothing personally and if you ever need anything before your appointment please call me so I can make it right! You deserve to be happy from the time you leave until the time you come back!

So, if something’s not quite right - speak up.”
