“Creating the perfect colour is one thing. But maintaining its brightness whilst keeping the condition of your hair is so important if you want to keep it looking its best.

The truth is, how often you should dye your hair is really different depending on what type of colour you have and the condition of your hair. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t be colouring your hair more frequently than every 6 - 8 weeks. However, there are cases when it can be done more often.

Let me explain... “

Foils

For foil highlights, you should go back to the salon every 6-8 weeks to keep your colour tidy and easy to maintain. The longer you wait to get your foils redone, the harder (ie: more expensive and longer time in the salon) it will be to get the seamless (rather than stripey) result you want to maintain (especially for those who are ultra blonde).

Full bleach

If you choose to go full platinum, you’ll need to be back at the salon every 4-6 weeks to get an even and seamless look. On-scalp bleach is activated by the natural human heat coming from the scalp. So the further away from the scalp we are, the less the bleach gets activated and the less the hair can ‘lift’ to a super light blonde. So if you’re a super blondie, you’ll need to keep your salon visits more regular.

Bright colours

If you want to be a unicorn or mermaid with pastel shades or a trending look like a super grey, the maintenance is going to be high on these to keep these hues on point. Fashion hair looks like these require very frequent toners to top up the vibrancy of the colour, as they wash out and fade quickly. Depending on the finish, a visit to the salon every 1-3 weeks is necessary. As for the roots, the advice above about scalp bleaching applies.

Balayage

The intention of balayage is that it looks natural, so as a result it is relatively low maintenance as far as the frequency of salon visits goes. Depending on how intense the balayage look is, every 8-12 weeks between salon visits should be sufficient. A toner needs to be done in between services to keep the colour fresh and ward away any unwanted brassy tones, which could be done every 4 - 6 weeks depending on the condition of the hair.

Semi-permanent tints

Semi-permanents are designed to slowy fade, so the maintenance is relatively easy as there is no regrowth as such.  A visit to the salon every 8 weeks is usually enough,  providing no grey hairs are coming through where you may have to come in every 6 if you want to keep them covered.

Semi-permanents are great to provide the shine and shades natural hair can be missing. If the shades are more intense (such as reds and coppers, which fade faster than other colours), you’ll need to visit the salon more frequently (4-6 weeks) if you want to maintain the hair’s brightness.
