Everything you need to know about vegan hair colouring

Want beautifully bright hair and a clean conscience?

Us too, that’s why we’re one of the only salons in the North West that offers colour services as a vegan option. Here, the boss, Maria, answers everything you need to know about our vegan hair colouring offering.

Want beautiful colour? But also want it vegan? We got you.

Bright, beautiful hair shouldn’t be at the expense of your ethics, and if you don’t eat animal products, well… we don’t expect you to put them on your hair either.

Our Founder, Maria, explains everything you need to know about our vegan hair colouring options at Red Door Hair Studio

What is the main difference between vegan and normal hair dye?

Vegan colours don't contain a chemical known as paraphenylenediamine PPD or contain very little/no ammonia (or a more gentle version of it). By not using harsh chemicals or irritants, we avoid or minimise the chances of allergic reactions or damage to the hair. Meaning that if you have sensitive skin or particularly dry hair, a vegan dye is a great alternative.

The downside is that the range of colours available is much more limited than with normal dye. If you want a 100% vegan experience, I can only go darker or add new reflexes to your natural level of colour but we can't go lighter. This is because to lighten the hair you have to use much harsher chemicals to get the desired colour.

What brand/type of vegan die do you use?

I use Remember Ecosostenible. It’s the only professional brand on the market with a range of  fully vegan products called Herbal Colour

The dyes are made of ayurvedic plants, flowers and fruits like henna, indigo, amla and cassia. The powders come already mixed to create a specific colour. We also use two other ranges where some minimum chemicals are used on the dyes to cover a more creative technical colouring such as multi-dimensional colours, highlights or balayage.

Can people have a full vegan experience at the salon? (Not just the dye but the products, shampoos etc)

Absolutely, yes. They can have a shampoo, a mask, and ayurvedic treatment to treat the scalp and strengthen hair.

Is the vegan colouring just as effective as the normal colour?

I wouldn’t describe it as less or more effective, Herbal Colour is just formulated differently. It’s formulated in a way that doesn't change the structure of the hair. It is a more superficial colouring process even though it’s permanent.

As I mentioned before, the range of colours is not as extensive as with normal dyes, due to them having to use less harsh chemicals in their formulas. Historically, they were warmer colours but lately a couple of more natural colours have been created.

What are the main benefits of vegan hair colouring?

  • It’s healthier for your hair and helps it to keep its natural shine. It helps keep hair long with a healthy appearance with natural volume.

  • It’s a natural hair treatment. Herbal Colour contains ayurvedic plants, flowers and fruits which, as well as stabilizing the colouring mixes, improves hair's health. Using plants specially selected for this purpose allows us to treat skin diseases, such as psoriasis, peeling and itching, among others, and also stimulates hair growth. These plants have calming, antihistamine and antibacterial attributes.

  • It’s kind on the environment. The products that we use do not contaminate the environment because they contain no disposable dye chemicals.
