We’ve all heard the saying that a trim every 6 weeks keeps your hair healthy, but endless lockdowns and salons closures over the last year has meant that many of us have left it longer than they normally would to give their locks a chop.
Unless you’re one of those who have picked up the scissors and gone all DIY on us? (Which we don’t recommend btw!)
But how often should you really get your haircut? The boss, salon owner and stylist, Maria, gives us the lowdown.
How long should I wait between haircuts?
“This is a question I get asked a lot and the truth is there isn’t a one size fits all answer. It really depends on the condition, type and what your hair goals are.”
If you want to keep it at the same length
“If you’re looking to keep it at the same length and you’re not looking to grow it, you should get it trimmed every 6 - 8 weeks. This is usually the case for those who have medium to long hair.
If you’re waiting for split ends to appear before booking your cut then that’s a sign that you’ve waited too long. Before a split end forms, the ends of your hair may start to feel dry and brittle - it may even be challenging to get a brush through it.”
This is when you need to call your hairdresser and book your cut.
If you want to grow it a little longer
“If you’re not just looking to maintain your growth but want to grow it a little longer then I’d recommend a cut between 3 - 6 months. However, you need to look after it during that time. If your hair becomes too split (I’ve seen split ends up to 6cm long), then it will become damaged and broken - meaning it won’t ever grow into the healthy tresses you’re after.
When you’re trying to grow your hair, I would always recommend having a deep conditioning treatment such as Olaplex when you can. Try to use a nourishing oil such as an argan or coconut oil to keep your end beautifully moisturised, the softer the hair the less likely it is to split.
If you have bangs or a fringe
These do need a little bit more maintenance to keep them looking fresh AF.
Maria explains: “Typically I’d get these trimmed every 3 to 4 weeks to avoid the hair in your eyes looks but some people may need to get them cut every 2 weeks.”
If you have short hair
“Short blunt cut or pixie cuts do need a little more maintenance to make sure they keep their fresh, modern look.
If your hair’s short you need to be looking at getting a cut every month or so.”
If you have thick or afro hair
Those with thicker or afro hair can usually afford to go a little longer without a snip.
“The average for thicker hair types is probably around 8 - 12 weeks. This is because thick hair tends to be more forgiving as it’s often stronger and shows less signs of damage.”
The final say
Ultimately, well looked after regularly trimmed locks will always look and feel better than those that aren’t.
“Remember to look out for the warning signs of dry, brittle ends. It’s a sign to book your appointment.”
